Interior Architecture vs Interior Design

Interior architecture is not decoration. It is the structural and spatial discipline that determines how rooms flow, how light moves, how circulation resolves, and how materiality defines the character of a space. Studio RDN-X approaches every interior project as an architectural problem first. We work with the building's structure, proportions and existing conditions to devise spatial strategies that improve how a home functions at a fundamental level — before selecting a finish or specifying a fixture. This means our interiors hold up over time. Spaces that are spatially resolved, well-proportioned and materially considered never go out of fashion.

What We Design

Our interior architecture services cover the full range of residential and hospitality spaces: Living spaces — spatial planning, fireplace design, architectural joinery, built-in storage, feature walls and ceiling treatments. Kitchens — bespoke kitchen design, material specification, layout optimisation and contractor coordination. Bathrooms and ensuites — luxury bathroom architecture, wellness-led design, material selection and technical detailing. Bedrooms and dressing rooms — bespoke wardrobe and joinery design, spatial planning, lighting strategy. Spa and wellness — pool surrounds, changing rooms, steam rooms, sauna design and wellness spatial strategy. Bars and entertainment spaces — bespoke bar design, wine storage, home cinema and entertainment room architecture. Our Kirk Hill project demonstrates the full range: a Grade II listed residential transformation including living rooms, a snug, a bar, a swimming pool with changing rooms, and guest ensuites — all delivered as a coherent spatial narrative.

03

Our Approach

We begin every interior project with a rigorous spatial brief. Before specifying anything, we interrogate how you live: how you move through your home, how you use each room across a day, what matters most to you about the spaces you inhabit. From this brief we develop a spatial strategy — a clear logic for how each room should perform, connect and feel. Material selection follows from this strategy, not the other way around. We work with a restrained but carefully considered palette of materials. Natural stone, handmade tile, tactile joinery, crafted metalwork and layered textiles. We do not trend-chase. We design for longevity. We manage the full interior process including contractor procurement, specification preparation, supplier coordination, site visits and sign-off. Our clients are involved in every decision but not burdened by the logistics.

Listed Buildings and Heritage Interiors

We have particular expertise in interior architecture within listed and heritage buildings — where constraints are tightest and the margin for error is smallest. Working within a listed building requires a precise understanding of planning policy, heritage significance and conservation principles. Studio RDN-X has navigated listed building consent for interior works across multiple projects, developing interventions that respect the building's historic character while creating interiors that meet contemporary standards of comfort, performance and luxury. If your property is listed or in a conservation area, we are experienced in working with conservation officers, heritage consultants and planning authorities to achieve the outcomes your project deserves.
